Greater States
By Jenny Bahn
In 2009, designer Ron Arad created a masterful work of art, titled Oh, the farmer & the cowman should be friends. Made out of stainless and Corten steel, the piece was designed as a wall-mounted bookshelf in the shape of the United States. The borders of each state created angles and surfaces that certainly did not make for easy stacking, but that was beauty of it. The result was a uniquely curated jumble of tomes, leaning this way and that.
Oh, the farmer & the cowman should be friends was not made for mass production or purpose, but it seems someone has been inspired to recreate Arad’s fantastic concept, this time in wood.

“It’s easy to see the pain here, but what’s beautiful to me is the love here, and the health here, and the idea that community, even if it’s a community of pain at first, is so healing. And that’s very simple, powerful idea, and it’s in action here.” -Meg Ryan
